Absolonia

This is a work in progress but I'm posting it anyway.  I still have a lot of practice to do in zbrush to get where I want with the program, but it really is fun to work with.

This is a character from the table top wargame Hordes, by Privateer Press, named Absolonia.  She is from a faction of winter elves who have been corrupted by an evil dragon.  Thus the horns.  I will post more progress pics as things progress, and I learn how to do more with 3D.

Sketch collection September

So this is a bunch of, mostly random, drawings that have been waiting around in my book for me to scan and post.  For the most part they don't have anything to do with each other, but a couple are related.

Anyway, so I watched Total Recall.  The 80's Arnold version, not the remake. And you know, underneath the veneer of cheesy lines, absurd action sequences and out dated style treatment, there is actually some very cool story ideas.  What is perceived as reality and fake memories being bought and manipulated, so the entire movie keeps pressing the question, is this real or just a dream?  I loved it, and thought, how about a sequel.  Not a remake.  A sequel to the original.  One where the same amount of time has passed between that movie, 1990 (I guess it technically isn't an 80's action flick), and 2014, and we find old Arnold waking up from his vegetative state/coma to find out it was, in fact, all a dream.

From there the story could go anywhere!  Revenge action, where he goes after the recall corp. for all his lost years.  Sad sap drama, where he has to reconcile with his loss and learn to find meaning in this unfamiliar world after a failed attempt to reconnect with his ex-wife, who had to painfully move on after trying so hard to save him from himself.  Only to find out that isn't the true fabric of reality either, and it's a suspenseful mystery movie!  One where he has to pry the truth out of a fragmented ever changing landscape of memories and dreams colliding with lies, and deception!  Twist ending!  He's actually just nuts.

Theses two were actually a exercise to try and come up with an alien whose evolutionary roots are fundamentally different from our own.  Every vertebrate on earth is built on pretty much the same foundation.  Spine, ribcage, limb bones, even mostly the same muscles.  Just variations on a theme.  I tried to think of a creature with a different common ancestor from everything we know.  What if it was something that started with no limbs?  The fish that crawled out of the pond on earth had fins. What if no fins.  A snake or something?  These critters are up the family tree from there, with extended and articulated what once were ribs, for limbs.

This is one of my characters.  I've been drawing variations of her since high school.  A sort of sci-fi ninja spy girl.  She's the one in my Digital Ninja post, wearing that helmet in her hand right now.

Yeah, I don't know about this guy.  I was reading a bunch about viking mythology, and they had a method of execution called the blood eagle.  Kinda the worst thing ever BTW.  Wikipedia that crap if you really want to know. Anyway, that was in my head when I drew this guy.  No blood eagle anywhere on the page, but just the idea that existed at all sure fits the vibe.  Maybe this is a king dude who didn't make into Valhalla. I dunno.  I was also thinking about the nature of addiction while I was drawing, so that's part of it.  Whatev, take what you want from it.  Moving on.

Sci-fi space trooper chick.  Her left arm is reaching behind her to wrangle the cables going from her backpack to her gun.

"I'm on fire, but I'm not dead.  Cool!"

Practicing expressions for animation type characters.  This is another one of my characters I've been drawing, in one form or another, since high school.  She's showed up before on this here blog.

That's all for now.  Signing off.
The Rew

Elf girl's first day at Magic School

This little character I think will be fun to animate.  After her first day at magic school, she comes home with antlers.  Surprise mom and dad!  Turns out she is really good at magic and not afraid to experiment.  Teacher says "I did not teach her that!  She figured it out herself, and it's exactly what she wanted. Not an accident. So she will be a great sorcerer some day, but it's going to be a strange ride."

So I read a bunch of Tank Girl comics

As is evidence from my previous post, I have been having fun with animation, and I have cooked up some characters that I want to make cartoons of. Story time!  This started with a sketch I posted before, of a girl mechanic who works on big bad war robots.  Eventually the evolution of her character had her being a punk who grew up hard in steampunk gangland, and joined the army to get out of the criminal factory, and get ahead in life.  Tough girl worked her way up to being the best and boss of the battalion's team of gearheads.

Oh! Side note.  I called the robot, a Centurion battle chassis, equipped with what the crew call Zeus' oven mitt. All the firepower of the god of lightening, all the dexterity of an oven mitt.

Quick Dialog

Well, it's been roughly forever since I animated anything, so I was how you say, ah yes, rusty as hell.  Turns out, I really enjoy this 2d animation stuff.  And will be doing more of this.
The sound clip is from the movie Thor.  I tried to make it sound more like a girl voice, but I'm no sound engineer, and the original sound clip from a frost giant who sounded super low and growly. Think, if Barry White was a frozen linebacker. I did what I could.  Whatev.
