Norse Mythology Day!

Hello friends!  I've decided today is a day for the old gods of the north.  The connection to be drawn here is my two characters Sasha and Grimm Isaac.  The story growing around these two is very directly referencing tons of Norse badassery.  So I ended up drawing more than just them.

A couple of the gods.  Thor, the dude with the hammer.  In the stories he fights the world serpent Jormungandr at Ragnarok.  The other one is Hel, queen of the dead.  Kind of a gloomy gal. Half beautiful woman, half death and decay.  Fun fact, both Hel and Jormungandr are children of Loki.  Also a few doodles of the mechanic (unrelated to Norse thingys).

Sasha and Grimm Isaac, our two modern heirs to the chaos of the war to end it all.

This one is the most recent one.  I gotta be honest, it's my favorite so far.  Till next time.
Toodles.

I've been busy. No really.

Well, I say it pretty much every time, but I haven't posted any thing in longer than I intended to. That doesn't mean I haven't been doing nothing.

Here!  Proof!

Robots and sci-fi peeps!  That plus the little mermaid, not a turtle, and a candle.

Also, my version of a corona commercial.  Sooo. . . I might have been in a teensy bit of a cynical mood at the time.

Ok, that's all for now.  More to come soon.

The Mechanic

Hello friends.  I have been a bit inconsistent with my updates, sorry.  So it's been a bit longer than I intended since my last post, but here's some more recent works.  I don't have any animation or 3d bits to post because I have been working on a cartoon project for a friend of mine and that has been taking alot of my time.  Since it isn't my IP, I'm not going to post any progress videos or pics.  When it's done I will see if I can post the video here.

In the meantime:

One of the characters I've cooked up is this mechanic girl, who fixes giant battle robots.  Here's the first picture I did of her.

Anyway, I've posted other pictures of her before, so you probably recognize her.  Well I often draw something random and then dream up and develop a story to go with it after the fact.  I did the same with the Valhalla Girl.  I've been developing the mechanic quite a bit, and you can see some of the evolution of her design as I try and work her into a character that I can animate later.

For all these expression sheets I looked at development pages from animated movies I like.  Alot were from The Road to El Dorado.  They were great reference.  If you wanna see go to http://livlily.blogspot.com. There is artwork from tons of animated movies and shows.  It's a little weird though, because alot of the expressions in those drawings don't fit her character very well.  Most of them aren't faces she wears very often.  I still struggle with consistency.  Having her look the same every time is difficult, but hey, practice makes perfect.

The way her story is growing in my head, is she is the chief of the ground crew for the warbots in an alternate history, slightly steampunky (but not really) ww2 ish time period.  She grew up in a rough part of town, in a family machine shop.  Crime and gangs sort of streets, where she grew into a tough, coarse hardass rather than become dependent on anyone else.  She joined the military rather than get sucked into gang life because they are small fry in comparison.  Spent some time in the trenches before her smarts stood out and her officers figured she would be more valuable fixing the big guns rather than carrying a small one. She isn't very big, which made her grow more fearsome to be able to hold her ground in two different aggressive environments.  It also made her develop her smarts and skills to get ahead.  So her bigger or older crew members have no problem with being the boss because she's the smartest one in the hangar.  No one knows the warbots like she does.

Sketch Dump!

Hey friends!  I haven't posted my sketches in a while.  Roughly some days since last time.

It's quite a grab bag of different stuff.  Some fast drawings, some not so fast, some took some time.

I even used reference for one of them! Look at me trying new things!

Valhalla Girl

Hey, remember this kid?

So, I've been drawing her some more, and figuring out her back story.  It helps that I've been listening to Norse mythology stories while working.  Cool stuff.

Valkyries collect the dead for Odin and Freya, who each get half of those who die in battle.  She has some kind of horrible tragedy, where she looses her fam and her right arm (I am totally not consistent about which hand is missing).  The two gods decide, she needs to go back to the mortal world because she will be needed to delay Ragnarok.

The big ghost was once a king who had his crown stolen.  He was executed by blood eagle when the battle was lost, and even though he made no sound, by a deception he was judged to have failed the test, and sent to the halls of Hel, rather than Valhalla.  When Odin decided to use Sasha, he offered a bargain to Hel. The king gets another chance to redeem himself, if he guides and watches out for Sasha.  He also brings her the gifts of her burning hand made from the bones of Tyr's right hand, bitten off by Fenrir, and her weapon, which can kill ghosts, made from sparks stolen from Surtr as he forges the sword that will burn the universe on Ragnarok.

Either that or she's crazy.

 And a doodle of Odin.

Gotta run. K bye.

Toon Cats

Hey dudes.  I made this clip for the September contest on 11secondclub.com, but I didn't get it finished in time.  I wanted to finish it anyway, cuz it's fun.

I'll update this when I get around to cleaning it up.

Absolonia

This is a work in progress but I'm posting it anyway.  I still have a lot of practice to do in zbrush to get where I want with the program, but it really is fun to work with.

This is a character from the table top wargame Hordes, by Privateer Press, named Absolonia.  She is from a faction of winter elves who have been corrupted by an evil dragon.  Thus the horns.  I will post more progress pics as things progress, and I learn how to do more with 3D.

Sketch collection September

So this is a bunch of, mostly random, drawings that have been waiting around in my book for me to scan and post.  For the most part they don't have anything to do with each other, but a couple are related.

Anyway, so I watched Total Recall.  The 80's Arnold version, not the remake. And you know, underneath the veneer of cheesy lines, absurd action sequences and out dated style treatment, there is actually some very cool story ideas.  What is perceived as reality and fake memories being bought and manipulated, so the entire movie keeps pressing the question, is this real or just a dream?  I loved it, and thought, how about a sequel.  Not a remake.  A sequel to the original.  One where the same amount of time has passed between that movie, 1990 (I guess it technically isn't an 80's action flick), and 2014, and we find old Arnold waking up from his vegetative state/coma to find out it was, in fact, all a dream.

From there the story could go anywhere!  Revenge action, where he goes after the recall corp. for all his lost years.  Sad sap drama, where he has to reconcile with his loss and learn to find meaning in this unfamiliar world after a failed attempt to reconnect with his ex-wife, who had to painfully move on after trying so hard to save him from himself.  Only to find out that isn't the true fabric of reality either, and it's a suspenseful mystery movie!  One where he has to pry the truth out of a fragmented ever changing landscape of memories and dreams colliding with lies, and deception!  Twist ending!  He's actually just nuts.

Theses two were actually a exercise to try and come up with an alien whose evolutionary roots are fundamentally different from our own.  Every vertebrate on earth is built on pretty much the same foundation.  Spine, ribcage, limb bones, even mostly the same muscles.  Just variations on a theme.  I tried to think of a creature with a different common ancestor from everything we know.  What if it was something that started with no limbs?  The fish that crawled out of the pond on earth had fins. What if no fins.  A snake or something?  These critters are up the family tree from there, with extended and articulated what once were ribs, for limbs.

This is one of my characters.  I've been drawing variations of her since high school.  A sort of sci-fi ninja spy girl.  She's the one in my Digital Ninja post, wearing that helmet in her hand right now.

Yeah, I don't know about this guy.  I was reading a bunch about viking mythology, and they had a method of execution called the blood eagle.  Kinda the worst thing ever BTW.  Wikipedia that crap if you really want to know. Anyway, that was in my head when I drew this guy.  No blood eagle anywhere on the page, but just the idea that existed at all sure fits the vibe.  Maybe this is a king dude who didn't make into Valhalla. I dunno.  I was also thinking about the nature of addiction while I was drawing, so that's part of it.  Whatev, take what you want from it.  Moving on.

Sci-fi space trooper chick.  Her left arm is reaching behind her to wrangle the cables going from her backpack to her gun.

"I'm on fire, but I'm not dead.  Cool!"

Practicing expressions for animation type characters.  This is another one of my characters I've been drawing, in one form or another, since high school.  She's showed up before on this here blog.

That's all for now.  Signing off.
